Manali is in the upper section of the Beas River valley a few
hundred miles north of Delhi. The views are spectacular and the air is fresh and clear. The entire valley is called the "valley of the Gods", because Manu, the Hindu version of Noah, came to settle here after the great deluge. Later, a council of the "gods" was setup in nearby Naggar, where they governed democratically. The valley is full of apple orchards, surrounded by steep mountains, many of them topped by snow eternally. Another town near Manali is Manikaran, also founded by Manu. It is revered as the meditation spot of Shiva, and his consort Parvati. It's on the Parvati River, and has hot springs. The Himalayas are the source of the sacred Jumna and Ganges rivers. There are two other rivers as well, that are considered sacred. They begin very high in the mountains, and many faithful Hindus try to reach at least one of the sacred sources during their lifetime. For thousands of years, these great rivers have literally brought life to countless people, in the form of water for irrigation and every other need. Beware.... traveling around the Himalayas by car is not for everybody ! The roads are narrow, sometimes with steep cliffs next to them, and the roads are shared by everyone from shepherds with goats to fairly large trucks and buses. Drivers use their horns constantly.
