Synthesis Volunteer Program Starting Our first trip to the Northeast Center is on the February calendar. By: Burton Aldrich, UCCC Synthesis We are starting a volunteer program that will educate and bring fun activities to the Northeast Center for Special Care. We will be working with people who have spinal cord injuries once a month. As the program grows we will branch out into the community to assist other people with their needs. The role of the volunteer is similar to the role of the earthworm in Nature’s synthesis. In Nature every level of activity is important. Though our involvement will be small at first it will expand. This program will reward not only the disabled and elderly in the community but it will also empower the volunteer. When you work with people who are different from yourself, you find your own awareness grows and expands. You quickly find that the people who you are ‘helping’ are also helping you and giving you an education not available in a classroom. This Synthesis program is the beginning of a better way of life for the people of the Northeast Center for Special Care. Instead of locking people out of sight and out of mind, they will be brought back into a community where they can feel at home and at one with all humanity as it should be.
