Peace of Rock About our company We promote products that are natural, long lasting, creative, artistic, unique, and aesthetically pleasing. Natural substances are the basis for most of what we sell. For thousands of years, nature has provided an abundance of beautiful materials that are also useful, found in art, tools, and construction, and one of the most common material is of course, rocks Materials such as agate, marble, limestone, quartz, granite, sandstone, wood, shells, as well as from many plants, animals and insects have been worked with and traded throughout man’s history. We offer small pieces of the big “rock”, our earth, for your enjoyment and utility. Our design philosophy is focused on functional art and the use of natural materials instead of manufactured objects to perform routine and necessary taks. We believe one of our dilemma as a civilization is how to have a comfortable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing life without tearing up the land and fighting over resources. To illustrate this principle let’s consider the elephant. For thousands of years, human beings have needed to transport heavy cargo and passengers over long distances. It’s necessary for commerce. They also have needed a way to lift heavy objects for construction. For a long time, people used elephants to do these tasks because they had no machines or factories. And these cultures lasted much, much longer than the current “western / European “ type of culture. In fact, elephants are still being used daily for work in many areas of the world, this after thousands of years. Imagine how much intelligence was involved in training and care for the elephants. But, no wars over diminishing fossil fuel, machine repairs, manufacturing centers, mining of minerals, no smog, and no limit to how many elephants they could raise over time. The same is true of many of the things we use every day. There is a natural material or substance that will accomplish the same task, likely for less cost, longer lasting, and more attractive. For example the Lufa sponge. People used to use natural sponges but now huge machines crank out millions of plastic sponges a day, ending up in the trash someday. Granted, some natural materials should not be “harvested” on a grand scale, but some can be cultured or “farmed” instead. So, we sell such things as wool, silk, and other natural fabrics. We sell stones, wood objects, shell materials, and so on. Besides the materials, there is the time and labor that goes into creating the things we need. To have what we have in our “modern” world, there is someone, somewhere, slaving in a factory, amidst noise and clatter, making it. Nature has provided and incredible bounty of natural products, all around us, that can use to do what we need to do in life. Many of these offerings by nature are already completely usable without any modification whatsoever, no labor but to pick it up and start using it. Yet, in our modern world, these items are going entirely to waste. Clearly we need manufactured products and machines. That is not the issue. How many, and what kind, do we really need, and what should we use them for? That is more relevant. |
