Nilgiri Mountain Railway,
India This is one of several high altitude railway routes in India (other major ones being the Darjeeling Hill Railway, the Kalka-Shimla Line, The Kangra Line, the Matheran Light Railway, etc.). These were constructed under the British rule to facilitate access to hill stations that served as summer retreats. These railway routes, as also several bridges and buildings and public institutions, remain today as glorious testimonials to the enterprise and dedicated inventiveness of the British. The NMR is a typical example of the almost superhuman feats of engineering achieved by them in a land far away from their own, nostalgia for which is poignantly reflected in the names of the stations on the route: Adderley, Hillgrove, Runnymede, Wellington, Lovedale and Fernhill. |
